This Romanesque style tower was built in the 14th century and the Genoese used the hill as a fortress. During the Ottoman Empire, when it was used as an observation tower to watch fires, the upper part of the tower with a conical cap was slightly modified in several restorations. In 1794, during the reign of Sultan Selim III, the top of the tower was built of lead and wood. In 1831 another fire damaged the building and new restoration work was undertaken.
For the rest of the Ottoman Empire, this tower did not have this cone-shaped roof. Many years later, during the 1965–1967 restoration project, the conical roof was rebuilt. During the last restoration in the 1960s, the wooden interior of the tower was replaced with a concrete structure.
